Lasting the distance

The effects of travel on a relationship can be positive and devastating. I know. Right now, I'm living the post-travel life. A life where I am settled in one city for an indefinite amount of time. For once in my life, I'm not thinking about the next trip, the next flight, the next...the next...I have arrived. I'm home. I've found a city that I love and when I wake up in the morning, it talks to me. And I was falling in love with someone, also living a post-travel life and together, for a while, we were going well. But now, the effects of all of those years of running are catching up with me. And even as I'm unsure if this relationship will make it and come out the other side and become, like myself right now, a new creation, better and stronger and more vibrant, I am still happy to be here. And the city is still talking to me.
And she's telling me to stay.
The walks are spectacular along the tracks of Cinque Terre. I recommend staying in one of the smaller villages, say Vernazza or Manarola and then walking in either direction to the other villages. Monterosso has some great Restaurants and it's well worth spending some time in this village to enjoy the 'older' part of the village.
Vernazza is a lovely small village but it gets packed out in the summer down by the jetty. The church is lovely...at night, you can sit on the rocks sticking into the water and look back. You'll see the church with her feet in the water, holding onto the beach and the sound of the water under the moon...it's a special place. For a quieter, perhaps less touristic side of the five villages, Riomaggiore may be the best way to go. The harbour is small but the whole atmosphere here is much less frantic and it seems to be more natural in terms of Italians doing life. Along her shores too, there are some nice spots to sunbathe and swim.
