Wellington's Top 10 Part 2

September 7th 2007 05:59
If life is the great adventure, what are the pit stops? It's raining today in Sydney and after a long week, I am grateful for the coming weekend. APEC may cause headaches and irate train travellers but we get an extra day to take a stop...a breather and chance to pause, glance behind or look ahead and feel out the road ahead. Where is it taking us? Is it where we want to be? I was in class yesterday and my students were describing their home city. Since most of my students are from Korea, we discussed Seoul. In a lull in conversation, I felt that moment when I stood in the midst of foreigners in the middle of Seoul. I remembered what it felt to be no one and yet be different...the Seoul air in Spring...the taste of Korean BBQ in the open...It would be nice to go back. Maybe this road will allow me a side trip to Asia soon.

Wellington's Top 10 things to do...here are the next 5 on my list:

6. Swimming in Oriental Parade
It has to be hot to get away with this but it's a cute beach and a great place to people watch. Oriental Parade is sheltered and the waters are calm.

7. Bike ride around Oriental Parade, through to Shelly Bay
Biking is a good alternative to walking or driving as you get into the face of the famous Wellington wind. The bike ride should take an hour or two but it's well worth the sights. You'll meet plenty of friendly people along the way.

8. Wellington Zoo
The Zoo is reasonably priced (about NZD15 per adult and NZD6 for children up to 16) and has a range of keeper talks and walks. Take a picnic and enjoy lunch at any of the picnic areas throughout the park.

9. Cuba Mall
Ths area used to be dirty and grungy but is now creative and somewhat exotic. It has some of the best cafes in Wellington, not to mention a memorable array of boutique shopping for all ages. Take a saturday morning stroll up this part of town.

10. Visit the Katherine Mansfield Birthplace
Ok, this may not be for everyone but not far away is St Paul's Church which is also lovely. If you don't gatecrash a wedding, you're probably the only tourist not to but both attractions are good for a quick hit if you feel you need to do something 'historical/cultural/serious'
