Wellington's Top 10
September 4th 2007 07:53
Time is a good guide and along with Truman's own inner conviction, we all realised as we watched the life of this burgeoning brave traveller that the questions within Truman would not be silenced. Truman, as with many of us, would have to act.
His calling would be to not only tear down the gilded cage around his life but to destroy it so he would never be able to return. Once he did, he was free.
As the Bible so emphatically and gracefully states: 'And you will know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.' John 8:32
Wellington, as any city, has a TOP TEN list of activities that every traveller should explore. Most of these activities will cost you nothing, so here are the first FIVE:
1. Te Papa.
It's a museum but it's not boring. Anyone who knows little or nothing about the cultural history of New Zealand should visit this musuem, Plus, it's free and it situated right along the beautiful harbour. There are a few amazing pieces in this museum and I would recommend at least a morning or an afternoon spent exploring its diverse offerings.
2. Botanical Garden
The gardens are sweet in Summer and fantastic in Spring. Take a Picnic and during the warmer months there's free music, walks and other events that lure visitors to stay until sundown.
3. Courtney Place on a Friday night
Courtney Place is the heart of Wellington's entertainment scene. It offers great coffee and cuisine for the evening, then head down either Blair street or Cuba street for a bar with music or stay on Courtney to go into one of the various clubs offering everything from 80's at Electric Avenue, to your latest dance music from a DJ at Coyotes to live Irish music at Molly Malones (on the corner of Taranaki and Courtney Place, it's very hard to miss)
4. Mt Victoria Lookout
The views from the top of the city are beautiful. Go at night and see Wellington lit up, but be careful. The young and the restless are often out and looking for someone to harass but if you stay in the car, you should be fine.
5. The Beehive
Yes. The beehive, our house of Parliament. It's kind of cute and the gardens surrounding this hive of activity are lovely. Next to the Beehive is the second largest building of wood in the world and you can get a tour of it. It's worth it if you want a quieter afternoon and appreciate all things old made new again.
